Survey shows college applicants avoiding states based on politics A survey from Art & Science Group reveals more than a quarter of college applicants avoiding schools in states that do not align with their politics. The days of applying to colleges individually and waiting weeks or months to learn if you were accepted are long past. Students applying for college admission can apply to multiple schools in single online applications. Some third-party platforms even notify students when they're accepted and provide details about financial aid offered. Here's a guide to the application platforms used by Erie-area colleges and universities. Pennsylvania West University, with campuses at Edinboro, Clarion and California, partnered with Niche Direct Admissions in November to both accept applications and inform would-be students in real time of acceptance and scholarship offers. To participate, applicants create a free online profile that can be submitted to multiple colleges partnering with Niche. "It's a quick and easy way for students who may not know if they qualify for specific colleges and universities to see if they would be admitted," said Adam Reynolds, assistant vice president for enrollment marketing and systems. "It helps us connect with students more quickly and efficiently. For students, it takes all of the guesswork out of how to apply and be considered for admission in what otherwise could be a weeks-long or months-long process," said David Dollins, associate vice president for strategic enrollment management. Students additionally benefit by saving the $35 application fee charged for direct applications. The platform allows PennWest to target students geographically. PennWest Edinboro mainly targets students from Erie, Crawford and Warren counties, northern Ohio and western New York. PennWest also accepts applications through Common App. Applications are accepted through several third-party platforms, including Common App and EAB Match. "They allow us to cast a little bit wider net and allow students outside the tristate find schools that they might not know of that meet their needs," said Miles Vida, senior associate director of undergraduate admissions. Students looking for an engineering program, for instance, at a small school or Catholic institution will find Gannon listed as a potential match through searches on the platform. Gannon received 849 applications in October through Common App, said Bridget Philip, director of undergraduate admissions. Gannon does not not offer admission directly through third-party apps. Once students apply through an app, admissions staff works with them one-on-one. "We want to be able to dive into specific coursework that students need to be successful," Philip said. "It helps students with preparedness and helps us with student retention." Mercyhurst University accepts applications through Common App and the Coalition for College App. The university typically provides admissions decisions and merit scholarship awards within two weeks, said Steve Gregg, executive director of admissions. Students can track their submissions in a Mercyhurst web portal in real time. "Our admissions process is designed to be efficient and responsive in meeting the needs of prospective students and those of our admissions team in working effectively to make decisions," Gregg said. Behrend accepts applications through Common App. The college notifies students of admission decisions. Students applying by the college's Nov. 1 early admission date each year receive an admissions decision by the end of December. "That process is faster — often within a few weeks — if the student applies directly to Behrend," college spokesman Robb Frederick said. Meadville's Allegheny College accepts applications through Common App and Coalition for College App and generally targets prospective students from Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Michigan and Maryland, the states with the most students applying to the college. Common App is the third-party platform most used by prospective Allegheny students, providing more than 700 admissions applications as of mid-November, said Jennifer Winge, Allegheny's vice president of enrollment management and marketing communications. "We notify students of acceptance promptly through our own mechanism. The student then will get a paper packet in the mail and information through our student portal, including merit scholarship information," Winge said.
