Ford brings car controls back to Wear OS with new app

After waiting just shy of a decade, Wear OS users can finally get controls for their Ford vehicle on their smartwatch with the launch of a FordPass app on the platform.

Way back in 2015, Ford announced its first Apple Watch app, at the time called “MyFord.” The app allowed users on Apple Watch to access some controls and status info for select vehicles from their smartwatch. At the time, Google’s Android Wear was also supported, but things changed in 2016 when Ford shifted its efforts over to the new “FordPass” app. The Apple Watch was quickly supported, but Wear OS has been left without that functionality for a while now.

Now, Ford has finally launched a Wear OS app, with FordPass now being available on the platform. The new app quietly debuted in November and is available for download from the Play Store, allows for drivers to send “remote commands” to their vehicle as well as seeing information such as battery status on EVs, or parking location.

As pointed out by TechIssuesToday, the app does require users to have a PIN or pattern lock on their smartwatch, and also seems to require that the phone app is opened up on occasion.
